Bellarine Bayside e-News

Welcome to the Summer edition of our e-News.

Happy New Year to our campers and community members alike. This summer seems to have just flown by! It feels like just yesterday we were welcoming the arrival of our peak summer season campers, who have since returned home. Summer mini-season campers have now arrived, staying with us until the end of April. The introduction of a regular ferry service to Docklands for the next three years is a welcome addition to our region and we encourage more people to use this service, whether it's to visit family and friends, spend a day on the beach or take a local winery tour.

Don't forget to follow us on social media for all the latest Bellarine Bayside news at your fingertips!

Camping and Accommodation Strategy

Do you live or holiday on the beautiful Northern Bellarine Peninsula?

Are you interested in the future of the Northern Bellarine camping reserves and holiday parks?

Do you have ideas to share?  Comments to make?

Bellarine Bayside wants to hear from you!

Over the past few months we have been gathering data and talking to both stakeholders and foreshore users about the potential opportunities for the Northern Bellarine and a strategy which will guide Bellarine Bayside’s accommodation and camping operations into the future.

We would now like to test our thinking and ideas with the communities of the Northern Bellarine and the campers who visit our foreshore reserves. We have released a consultation brochure which summarises the reasons behind the need for a camping and accommodation strategy and the ideas and proposed directions for the future.

To download a brochure and complete the online survey please follow this link.

Thank you to everyone who has already provided feedback and completed the online survey. The survey will be available until Sunday 19 February 2017.

Camper Connections

Thank you to all our campers who attended these sessions in Portarlington, Indented Head or St Leonards on 19, 20 and 21 January 2017. These sessions allow our campers to informally chat with, and provide feedback to, the Committee, CEO and Senior Management Team. They also provide Bellarine Bayside with a unique opportunity to capture issues close to the hearts of our campers as well as feeding into our works and maintenance programs in the coming years. Many improvements and upgrade works during winter 2016 were a direct result of these camper connections sessions in January 2016.

Indented Head Boat Ramp Upgrade

In 2016, local MP for Bellarine, Lisa Neville announced grant funding to upgrade several boat ramps on the Bellarine Peninsula. The Indented Head boat ramp at Wrathall Reserve received $360 000 as part of this grant and in 2016 many of you submitted feedback on the proposed plans. Bellarine Bayside is pleased to announce that works on the Indented Head boat ramp upgrade will commence in the week beginning 6 February 2017. During this period access to the Indented Head boat ramp will be restricted. Alternative boat ramps are located at St Leonards and Pt Richards. Works are planned to be completed prior to Easter 2017. The works will replace the Indented Head boat ramp with a new ramp that will be more accessible to a wider variety of vessels and relieve congestion at the St Leonards boat ramp.

Meet Our Staff - Wendy Kerr

WendyKWendy has worked with Bellarine Bayside since November 2014 after selling the Peterborough General Store in 2006 (having owned it for 6 years). She then spent several years working in relief park/motel management across the State. Wendy works as a casual in the Bellarine Bayside Holiday Park reception office in Portarlington, where it's always a busy place to be, particularly during summer! Wendy lives locally in St Leonards after building there in 2010. When not working, Wendy enjoys visiting family, getting out in the veggie patch, walking, fishing, reading and catching up with the kids!

Entries close Thursday 9 February at 9pm
Don't forget you can follow up your Sunset Run with a swim in the Wreck2Reef at Indented Head on Sunday morning.
Protecting our Flora and Fauna
brush tail wallabyVictorians are encouraged to have their say on the review of the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, a key part of Victoria’s legislative framework for the protection and management of biodiversity. The Act has been in place for nearly thirty years, but this has coincided with a decline in Victoria's biodiversity. The Act’s objectives aim to conserve all of Victoria’s native plants and animals. The Act establishes a range of mechanisms to achieve this objective, including:
  • listing threatened species, communities and threats to native species
  • requiring an overarching strategy for Victoria's biodiversity
  • enabling the declaration of habitat critical to the survival of native plants and animals
  • placing a duty on public authorities to have regard to the objectives of the Act in their operations
  • requiring permits for activities that could harm threatened plants and fish and communities.

Over 700 species and communities and 42 threats are listed under the Act. Bellarine Bayside manages several habitats that are home to threatened and endangered species, and the conservation of these habitats and species is a core part of our work as land managers.

A consultation paper has been prepared to seek community feedback on the Act and how it could be improved by incorporating improvements in our knowledge of native flora and fauna. The consultation paper and information on making a submission can be viewed here.

Consultation closes on Monday 13 March 2017.
