Act-Belong-Commit Newsletter
for Karratha and Onslow

Project Update

It’s been a busy few months for Act-Belong-Commit (can you believe it’s already April?!) with some recent highlights including Feel Good Feb, being involved in National Youth Week activities and some behind-the-scenes evaluation and planning for the months ahead.

Last year we announced that Healthway have confirmed funding for the Act-Belong-Commit campaign for the 2017-2019 period. Healthway’s continued support will allow the team at Mentally Healthy WA to maintain and expand our work promoting good mental health to the WA population. If you’re part of a local community group, organisation or business and have been thinking about becoming an Act-Belong-Commit Partner, now is the time to do so! Read below for more information on what it means to partner with us.

This edition also includes information on National Volunteer Week, the Karratha Mother's Day Classic and an employment opportunity with Mentally Healthy WA.

We welcome contributions for our newsletter from our local Karratha and Onslow community partners. If you would like to showcase a particular event or activity, please send a short article (200 words max.) and photos through to gemma.brooks@curtin.edu.au and we can include it in the next edition.

For more frequent updates on what we’re getting up to, don’t forget to ‘like’ the Karratha and Onslow Facebook pages!

  Pilbara Health Promotion Coordinator

Karratha Mother’s Day Classic

Registrations are now open for the 2017 Karratha Mother’s Day Classic! With five weeks to go there is still plenty of time to set yourself a personal challenge to walk, run or fundraise, get active, join in a community event and support a good cause. Volunteering is another great way to get involved if you are unable to run or walk on the day.

For the third year in a row we will be entering an Act-Belong-Commit team, which is open to anyone in the community who would like to join. Last year we had 45 people joining in the fun! Select the ‘Karratha Act-Belong-Commit’ team during your registration to receive a FREE Act-Belong-Commit Mother’s Day Classic team shirt to wear on the day. Email your size to gemma.brooks@curtin.edu.au  before 3pm Wednesday 12 April to secure your shirt.

National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week (NVW) 8-14 May is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers. We’re encouraging you all to embrace the NVW theme ‘Give Happy, Live Happy’, as research shows volunteers live happier, healthier lives.

To celebrate we’re hosting a state-wide competition to hear how volunteering keeps you mentally healthy. Enter now at http://bddy.me/2oA2Ihe for the chance to win an iPad. Competition closes Friday 5 May.

To keep up-to-date with local activities and events planned for the week, register your interest at gemma.brooks@curtin.edu.au or keep an eye on the Act-Belong-Commit Karratha and Onslow Facebook pages.

Employment Opportunity

It is with mixed emotions that I announce I will be leaving my position at Mentally Healthy WA to move to Perth later this year. I’ve enjoyed my time working on the Act-Belong-Commit campaign with such a supportive team and will very much miss the Pilbara way of life! Mentally Healthy WA is seeking a dynamic, self-motivated individual with relevant experience in a health promotion or community development role to fill the position of Pilbara Health Promotion Coordinator. If this sounds like the job for you, click here to see the full job advertisement. Applications close 19 April 2017.
