Bellarine Bayside e-News

Welcome to the March edition of our e-News.

There have been a number of events and activities held on the foreshore since the last e-News, including the Bellarine Sunset Run (2nd year), the Wreck2Reef open water swim (since 2010) and Race 4 of the five-race Gatorade Triathlon series, which has been held annually in Portarlington for the past 31 years. As the foreshore land manager we support all of these events in different ways from providing the use of  equipment and venues to ensuring course locations and the coastal trail are properly maintained and freshly prepared for each event. Each event brings greater recognition (and tourism dollars) to the northern Bellarine Peninsula and provides a great introduction to the region for the many visitors who attend these annual events. Bellarine Bayside is a proud supporter of local events.

Don't forget you can share our e-News to interested persons using the buttons above and follow us on social media for immediate updates!

Indented Head Boat Sheds

The iconic boat sheds on the Indented Head foreshore have always attracted a lot of interest from locals, visitors and holidaymakers, but available permits were few and far between with a large wait list. Recently, these permits were discontinued and a new 10-year licence arrangement was put in place. The existing 19 permit holders were each offered a 10-year licence with conditions of improvement and all took up this offer. Bellarine Bayside has restored an additional three boat sheds to the strict heritage overlay conditions and the first of these licences was auctioned on Saturday 11 March 2017. A large crowd gathered at Boat Shed #11 to witness the auction of the licence to this boat shed. Several bidders battled over the boat shed until the licence was eventually sold for $116,000. This was a great result for Bellarine Bayside and will enable us to put resources back into managing and improving the foreshore reserves.

The remaining two licences to Boat Shed #2 (the red boat shed on the right below) and Boat Shed #6 will be auctioned on Saturday 15 April 2017 at 11:30am starting with Boat Shed #6. All enquiries should be directed to Luke Campbell or Trevor McManus at Neville Richards Real Estate on 03 5257 1778.

UPDATE: Indented Head Boat Ramp Upgrade

In 2016, local MP for Bellarine, Lisa Neville announced grant funding to upgrade several boat ramps on the Bellarine Peninsula. Works commenced in the week beginning 6 February 2017 and are currently progressing well. An exposed and damaged section of the boat ramp has been removed and the installation of sheet piling is well underway. These works have taken longer than anticipated due to difficult soil conditions and the boat ramp will not be open until after Easter 2017. We apologise for any inconvenience due to the extended closure of this boat ramp.

During the works program access to the Indented Head boat ramp will be restricted. Alternative boat ramps are located at St Leonards and Pt Richards. These works will replace the Indented Head boat ramp with a new ramp that will be more accessible to a wider variety of vessels and relieve congestion at the St Leonards boat ramp.

The Boating Safety Facility Program administered by the Minister for Ports and Bellarine Bayside provided approximately $450,000 to the upgrade of the Indented Head boat ramp.

Nurturing nature with the Bellarine Nature Cadets

Twelve local schoolchildren aged between 9 and 13 years were inducted as Bellarine Nature Cadets at Portarlington Neighbourhood House in February. The Bellarine Nature Cadets is a joint program between Bellarine Bayside and Portarlington Neighbourhood House and aims at getting kids involved with nature, learning about environmental values and conservation issues in their local region.

The program runs over six weeks and has been extremely popular. If your child is interested in the next Bellarine Nature Cadets program (dates and time to be confirmed), please contact Jane at janes@bellarinebayside.com.au or on 5254 4010.

Celebrating a milestone

On 14 March 2017 one of our many long-term campers, Joan Steart, celebrated her 95th birthday, marking a major milestone! Joan and her husband Bill have been camping in the Portarlington Holiday Park for 65 years without missing one year and have been lucky enough to camp in the same beachfront site for that entire time. Every year Joan and Bill celebrate their birthday's with their relatives and many friends they've met in the park while on holidays. We wish them both many more birthdays to come and look forward to celebrating with them again in 2018!

Twelve month permit (TMP) site-holder contracts

Twelve month permit contracts will be posted to all current permit-holders at the end of March/early April. All signed permit agreements together with caravan registration papers and public liability insurance must be returned with payment (or the first instalment) prior to 30 June 2017. Early bird fees are to be paid in full by 31 May 2017 (a fee schedule will be provided in the contract pack). Permit-holders are reminded that, under the Crown Land (Reserves) Act 1978, these permits are not automatically granted and if granted the permit-holder must abide by the conditions set out in the permit. Under these conditions sites can only be used for a maximum of 59 consecutive nights per year and a total of 180 days in a calendar year. Twelve month permit sites cannot be sublet privately or through online sites such as Airbnb. For further clarification or queries please email us at info@bellarinebayside.com.au.
